After a pleasant night listening to the rapids outside our room, we awoke fresh and ready for the challenge ahead. Going off grid a tad, might be fun, but it can be a bit of bitch if you miscalculate the distance of the day ahead.
I estimated we had a solid day of 28 kilometres, but it ended up being 31.4 kilometres, which was an error of over 10% the wrong way. Bad Twitchy.
Error withstanding it was a great day, albeit a anything over 30 kilometres is a bigger challenge than it needs to be.
We left the quaint Chainbridge Hotel and headed up to Llangollen Wharf before heading out of town and getting back on the Offa's Dyke Path. We started the climb, and took the safe option of by-passing Castle Dinas Bran ruins on top of the hill to conserve energy. Too many Castles - so little time.
Lucky we did, as I ran out of water for the first time on any walks over here. 💦
Lots of lovely highlights, walking along the canal, which was very pretty and flat.
We like flat - a lot. The really special highlight was walking across the Pontcysyllte aquaduct, whilst the narrow boats putt putted past us high up in the air, whilst
the River Dee thundered below us.
But this was only half way at best, so realising we still had a fair way to go, we pushed on. And whilst the second half of the walk was very nice, it was never going to compare to the sensational first half. And it had one nasty mofo of a hill to climb. We knew it was coming, and the bastard did not let us down. Little did we know, whilst we were tackling the beast, circumnavigating Castle Chirk the support crew had been through earlier that morning?!!
Personalised tour no less!
My Princess was not to be denied.
And on and on it went. Despite our foot/feet niggles that we both have, we powered on.
On and on and on...
Best of all both Bungee and Limpee were waiting to meet us. Gailee was a bit sneaky, hiding in the hedge row to supplies us ( that is Chinese for surprise ). It almost worked...
I thought it was another pesky squirrel.
Weather was great, but we know that is going to end. The wet shit is coming.
Big walk
Big day
We followed the acorns.....
