Bendy ODP Day 3 - Llanarom-yn-ial to Berwyn (Llangollen)

23.0 Km in 6:07

A far cry from yesterday, today was a great day with very different countryside. We were driven back to where we finished yesterday and started with a short steep climb. Once over the top we spent most of the next 8Km walking in fields. It's always good to have soft footing in the fields.

At the 8Km mark we started a long uphill climb for about 2Km. The first 1.5Km of this climb was through a pine forrest. The air was cool, the ground good for walking and the hill not too bad.

Pine forrest

The Forrest track opened up to a huge area carpeted with heather; we could have been on the Yorkshire moors. The track here was a mix of deep furrowed goat track, board walks (these were great) and large stepping stones. We met quite a few other people doing the ODP and it appears as though the majority of people walk this in the opposite direction to us (they do South to north).

After a long stretch of downhill road walking we came too a ford across the road. The crossing was slippery but we used the stepping stones to get across.  A woman inn a group of walkers ahead of us slipped in the ford and got really wet (thankfully she wasn't injured).

Crossing the ford

We made good progress and were soon walking through scree under some high cliffs. They were amazing and came into view (almost out of nowhere) as we rounded a corner from a woodland. We stopped under a tree near a small stream for lunch and then continued along the scree slopes down to a road.

We are staying at The Chain Bridge in Berwyn so we went 'off grid' for about 2 Km to take the alternative path past the Vale Crusis Abbey. The guidebook map for this was not the best so we did a loop of about 300m before heading inn the correct direction. We then backtracked along the canal to the hotel. Libby and Gail had not checked in yet but were only about 15 minutes behind us.

Canal

The four of us did a pleasant stroll to the Horseshoe Falls, lovely location and interesting description of the canal.
